On August 17, 2015, Governor Bruce Rauner signed 5B 107 into law as Public Act 99- 0375. This law expands the scope of the Disabled Veterans Standard Homestead Disabled Veterans Standard Homestead Exemption expanded the Exemption so that:
If the qualifying veteran has a service connected disability of 30% or more but less than 50%, the annual exemption is $2,500, (previously this was $0);
If the qualifying veteran has a service connected disability of 50% or more but less than 70%, the annual exemption is $5,000, (previously this was $2,500)
If the qualifying veteran has a service connected disability of 70% or more, then the property is exempt from taxation, (previously this was a $5,000 exemption).
If the qualifying veteran has a service connected displease contact the Supervisor of Assessments Office at 217-826-5815 or stop by the office in the Courthouse for an application. If you are a veteran who has already been approved at the 50% or above level, no action from you is necessary. We will adjust the exemptions accordingly.
